In Tamil-speaking south India, the Kural is revered as a guide to goodness and good sense in the nitty-gritty of daily life. Its great practicality, openness, and ecological wisdom make it strikingly relevant to our time. Yet this masterpiece of world literature, on par with the Tao Te Ching, has long lacked translations that make its guidance, vision, and playfulness available in English. In 2022, Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma published a translation that has been acclaimed as “without doubt the best ever into English.” This May and June, he is offering a course on the Kural for people concerned about the social and ecological discord in the world and in search for ways to infuse their lives and actions with greater strength, integrity, and love.
