author, poet, teacher, and performer
I’m very excited to announce my upcoming online course on the Kural, Taller Than A Mountain.
It starts May 8, with a free intro class on April 24: FACING TUMULT WITH INTEGRITY: The Kural, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. on Nonviolent Action.
The class will be held via Zoom at 6:00pm Pacific | 9:00pm Eastern | 6:30am India (April 25) | 9:00am Singapore (April 25)
We associate nonviolence with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, whom King called “the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change.” What isn’t as well known is that Gandhi in turn was inspired by Tiruvalluvar and the Kural.
A hidden thread thus joins the practical wisdom of classical Tamil, Tiruvalluvar, Gandhi, and Dr. King. Join me for an exploration of these connections across times, lands, and languages. I’ll show how all three of these visionaries can inspire clarity and courageous action in our own time and place. You’ll gain:
* A wider perspective on the practice of nonviolence that can steady and nourish our hearts and minds in times of change.
* A friend and companion in the form of the poet Tiruvalluvar, whose work speaks to the present, offers new ways of seeing old problems, and cultivates practical wisdom in the nitty gritty of daily life.
* An understanding of how ideals and practices travel across the borders of language, culture, religion, and community to nourish and support efforts to live together in harmony.
This live class will be recorded, so even if you can’t attend live, you’ll be able to access the recording.
