Teaching

For me, writing, speaking, teaching are deeply intertwined.

Whether through a poem, a talk, a workshop, or a course, I cherish being able to share meaningful and even life-changing insights with people who want to be fully themselves and to cherish what is good in the world.

One way I do this is through talks, performances, and workshops that I offer in person and online on behalf of libraries, schools, and other community organizations.

I also teach groups and individuals around the world online. You’ll find my current offerings below.

Taller Than A Mountain: An Online Course

A 7-week online course on the Kural, ancient wisdom from Tamil Nadu, India: TALLER THAN A MOUNTAIN. Embody strength, integrity, and love in a turbulent world. With translator Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma and distinguished guest teachers

Each year I offer a seven-week course on the Kural that addresses the following questions:

How do you live and act ethically in a complex and changing world?

And how do you relate with integrity and love to the workings of wealth and power?

Past participants have found the my approach “accessible,” “one-of-a-kind,” and “an oasis of calm.” I’d love for you to join us!

One-on-One Mentoring

Along with working with groups, I cherish teaching one-on-one.

It allows me to offer something akin to what I’ve received from the great teachers who’ve graced and blessed my own life: a deeply meaningful experience tailored exactly to a particular person’s aspirations and circumstances.

If you have the hunch I might be able to help you as a mentor, coach, or creative consultant, take a peek at how I work and don’t hesitate to contact me.

“Thomas is very generous, with his time, ideas, effort and understanding, all of which he offers with the utmost friendliness and endearing sincerity. . . . He was near perfect as a mentor.”

Cozy Grammar

I’ve been delighted to help carry on the legacy of Marie Rackham and the Cozy Grammar series of online video courses. Cozy Grammar helps families, students, and teachers who are tired of the confusing rules of grammar stopping them from fulfilling their dreams and who want to open new doors through the power of clear and creative language.

Students around the world delight in Marie’s approach, her love of words, and her life-affirming personality, not to mention her sense of humor and playfulness.

As Cozy Grammar’s Language Consultant, I offer videos lessons on the connections between grammar and creativity—one for each lesson taught by Marie—and help keep Marie’s Study Notes and Exercises up-to-date and as helpful as possible.

The Art of Listening

I’m honored to offer a course through TL Global Insights Enrichment Hub on learning to hear and command the music of words.

Just as a piece of music can stir us profoundly, so too can the music of language affect us in the very depths of our being.

Yet this aspect of writing and of language can easily be overlooked because it involves, not what we see on the page, not what we read in silence, but what we hear when we dare to read out loud. An invisible source of power and sense that helps us see what was there in the silence and makes even the silence speak.

The 7 sessions of this course are designed to help you tap into this source, in what you read and what you write.

“I think one of the most underrated and precious gifts as a writer or creative is being able to have had the right mentors and the right guidance, especially at the budding stage where everything is fragile. I am blessed to have gotten that. They say that the great teachers inspire and Thomas has done that.”

In the coming months I anticipate offering a series of free webinars, a course on the poetry of Avvaiyar, and my annual course on the Kural.
