SUMMARY:Integrity that Sings: The Kural on Goodness of Character
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be offering a free talk and Q&A about the Kural through the King County Library System in Washington State. \nHere is the event description: \n“In South India\, the Kural is revered as a guide to practicing goodness and good sense in daily life. Yet this masterpiece of world literature\, on par with the Tao Te Ching and the poetry of Rumi\, has long lacked translations that make its guidance available in English. \n“Translator and poet Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma shares his journey with translating this seminal work and explores the astonishing relevance of the Kural today by delving into its conception of integrity\, harmony\, and the naturalness of goodness. He hopes you’ll come away feeling inspired\, renewed\, and reminded of truths that can help us to navigate times of great change with wisdom and grace.” \nPlease register in advance. You will be emailed a link no later than one hour before the program start time. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:The Art of Listening: Four Ways to Journey Across Worlds Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:As part of being the Singapore Book Council‘s first translator in residence\, I’m delighted to offer a translation masterclass. \nHere is a complete description: \nWhat makes a translation come alive? How can words cross between worlds? In this interactive masterclass\, the author\, poet\, translator\, and teacher Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma will guide participants through four key aspects of literary translation: clarity\, tone\, structure\, and completeness. Bring one or two pages of something you’re currently translating or would like to translate and a willingness to stretch your imagination! Through group discussion\, mini lectures\, and hands-on experimentation\, you will deepen your knowledge of both the artistic and practical dimensions of literary translation and come away inspired by new perspectives and possibilities. \n(This masterclass is part of a series of programmes under the SBC Translator Residency conducted by Thomas Hitorshi Pruiksma.) \nLunch and tea will be provided. \nLearning Objectives\nAt the end of the masterclass\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify which aspects of any particular work they most wish to convey\, understanding how clarity about those aspects can help guide the larger process of translation.\nDeal adroitly with the question of tone in English with an understanding of the often overlooked historical and structural factors involved.\nOrient their work toward larger structures such as phrases\, clauses\, sentences\, and paragraphs to give their translation greater consistency and flow.\nDetermine for any particular work those factors which lead to a complete and fully integrated translation able to shine on its own.\nNavigate both the professional demands of publishing and the artistic and cultural contexts to which their translation will pertain.\n\nProgramme Itinerary \n\nIntroductions\nThe first aspect: CLARITY\nThe second aspect: TONE\nThe business of translation\nThe third aspect: STRUCTURE\nThe fourth aspect: COMPLETENESS\nGuided translation exercise*\nClosing Review\n\n* Do prepare one or two pages of something you’re currently translating or would like to translate to the masterclass. The masterclass will focus on translations into English\, and there are no restrictions on the source language.

SUMMARY:An Afternoon of Translation & Transcreation
DESCRIPTION:As part of being the Singapore Book Council‘s first translator in residence\, I’ll be joining Zulfadli Rashid for what should be a very rich afternoon of sharing and discussion. \nHere is a complete description: \nJoin us for a translation-filled afternoon as we hear from two creators working in two different genres: Big\, a playwright known for his transcreations of plays such as Haresh Sharma’s Hope and Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange and Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma\, translator of Tamil and Spanish\, whose notable translations include The Kural: Tiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural and Give\, Eat\, and Live: Poems of Avvaiyar. Find out how through their translations and transcreations\, they allow their choice work to be more accessible to the current-day audience. \nTranscreation \nIn this segment\, Zulfadli Rashid will share more about his ‘transcreation’ journey which began in 2015 with Haresh Sharma’s Hope\, which he adapted into Malay\, entitled Harap. Since then\, he has translated and/or adapted (this process later on called ‘transcreation’) Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange into Orang\, as well as Tze Chien’s Poop into Berak. Both plays went through the process of transcreation into the Malay universe\, and not necessarily for the Malay-speaking audience\, but rather for a more contemporary theatre audience\, regardless of their background. \nBig will shed light on his creative process with Mari Kita Main Wayang by Felix Cheong\, where he approached transcreation with added complexity\, particularly focusing on language intricacies and modernising the thematic elements from the original script\, yet ensuring that the form\, the traditional structure and cultural nuances that defined a Perenakan play still remained intact. \nMari Kita Main Wayang will be staged at the Esplanade – Theatres by the Bay from November 17 – 19. \nTranslation \nIn this segment\, Thomas will take us “behind the scenes” of his translations from Tamil and from Spanish and share how each one of them ultimately demanded its own poetics and approach. He’ll explore the challenges involved in rendering in English the compact verse form of the The Kural: Tiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural\, in conveying the imagery and phrasing of Avvaiyar’s poems in Give\, Eat\, and Live\, and in being true to the rhythms and to the silence that make Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo the masterpiece in Spanish that it is. \nHe’ll also explore the questions of serendipity and synergy that have been key to his journeys between and across worlds. \nThis programme is presented in collaboration with Esplanade–Theatres on the Bay (Singapore). \nSimple refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Taller Than a Mountain SESSION SEVEN
DESCRIPTION:How do you live and act ethically in a complex and changing world? And how do you relate with integrity and love to the workings of wealth and power? \nIn Tamil-speaking south India\, the Kural is revered as a guide to goodness and good sense in the nitty-gritty of daily life. Its great practicality\, openness\, and ecological wisdom make it strikingly relevant to our time. Yet this masterpiece of world literature\, on par with the Tao Te Ching\, has long lacked translations that make its guidance\, vision\, and playfulness available in English. In 2022\, Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma published a translation that has been acclaimed as “without doubt the best ever into English.” This May and June\, he is offering a course on the Kural for people concerned about the social and ecological discord in the world and in search for ways to infuse their lives and actions with greater strength\, integrity\, and love. \nIt’s being offered at a price that you set yourself as a way to practice one of the Kural’s key teachings: honoring what fits each person\, place\, and situation. SUMMARY:Taller Than a Mountain SESSION THREE
DESCRIPTION:How do you live and act ethically in a complex and changing world? SUMMARY:School of Kural: Thirukkural's Place among World Philosophies of Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be speaking on a panel about The Kural at the Singapore Writers Festival. Here is a description of this multilingual discussion: \nWritten by the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar\, and translated into more than 40 languages\, the Thirukkural is a classic book of Tamil wisdom poetry. Where is the place of the Thirukkural among world philosophies of wisdom? This panel session contemplates on what if the Kural had been a major school of thought along the likes of well-renowned philosophies from different parts of the world. How would\, and could it have informed and changed the course of global history? Hear from speakers Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma\, Dr Azhar Ibrahim\, and Chow Teck Seng who share the insights they glean from the Kural on universal ethics and morality and read and discuss translations of the Kural into Chinese\, Malay\, and English. \nThis programme is made possible with the support of the U.S. Embassy Singapore and co-presented with Poetry Festival Singapore.

SUMMARY:Riches of the Ear: A Celebration of Words and Wonder
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be performing at the Singapore Writers Festival. Here is a description of this multidisciplinary and multilingual event: \nWhat magic can happen if we dare to listen to our hearts? In this original performance\, the author and teacher Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma combines poetry\, magic\, story\, and song to explore the art of listening. He draws on the classical Tamil masterpiece on ethics\, power\, and love\, Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural\, and on other beloved poets in Tamil\, Spanish\, and English\, to explore what Thiruvalluvar calls “riches among riches\, the highest of all other riches.” \nThis performance is followed by a 30-min bilingual Meet-The-Author session with Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma in English and Tamil. The MTA session is co-presented with the Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture and the National Library Board. \nThis programme is made possible with the support of the U.S. Embassy Singapore.

SUMMARY:Everyone Receives Rain: A Journey with Avvaiyar
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be speaking about Avvaiyar at the Singapore Writers Festival. Here is a description of my upcoming lecture: \nWhy would a budding writer and poet in English become an apprentice to a 12th century Tamil woman\, poet\, and saint? What’s so compelling about Avvaiyar that Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma spent years learning from her? Tamil literature has given women of wisdom a revered place for more than 2\,000 years. In this lecture\, Thomas tells the story of his translation of Avvaiyar and explores what she and her tradition can teach us about honouring words\, each other\, and the earth beneath our feet. \nThis lecture is co-presented with the Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture and the National Library Board\, and is made possible with the support of the U.S. Embassy Singapore.
