SUMMARY:Wisdom That Sings: The poetry and translations of Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma (Reading Session)
DESCRIPTION:As part of being the Singapore Book Council‘s first translator in residence\, I’m delighted to offer an evening reading. \nHere is a complete description: \nJoin poet\, translator\, teacher\, and performer Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma for a reading of his own poetry and translations from Tamil and from Spanish. Interspersing his reading with stories and reflections\, he’ll guide listeners into an experience of lyric philosophy: clarity expressed in the music of words and silence. The reading will be followed by an open discussion and book signing. \n(This reading session is part of a series of programmes under the SBC Translator Residency conducted by Thomas Hitorshi Pruiksma.)

SUMMARY:Ethics\, Power\, and Love for a Changing World with Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma
DESCRIPTION:I’m delighted to be speaking about the Kural in conversation with actor Jeanne Dougherty at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA). \nIf you live in the region\, I most heartily encourage you to attend in person. \nIf you live elsewhere\, I encourage you\, equally as heartily\, to watch the livestream free or by donation. \nHere’s a description of the event: \nIn South India\, the Kural is revered as a guide to practicing goodness and good sense in daily life. Yet this masterpiece of world literature\, on par with the Tao Te Ching and the poetry of Rumi\, has long lacked translations that make its wisdom available in English. In honor of National Poetry Month\, Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma reads from his new translation and speaks with actor Jeanne Dougherty about his twenty-year journey to bring it to life. Whether you attend in person or online\, he hopes that you’ll come away feeling inspired\, reconnected to your own sources of knowing\, and reminded of truths that can help all of us navigate times of great change with grace. \nCopies of the Kural may be purchased from the Vashon Bookshop beforehand or at the reading itself.
